My Day And Night Skincare Routine

skincare routine

Visit any beauty website or beauty blog, and you’ll know that the latest trend in makeup is no longer makeup. It’s skincare routine.

Makeup can often be very harsh on the skin, especially if you apply a full face every single day, and sometimes forget to take it off at the end of the day! This is why there’s been a focus on making sure you have the best canvas possible in order to do your makeup, and here comes skincare.

I’m actually not quite sure who to thank for the boom in skincare products lately. I mean, it’s always been around. The French, for example, are taught to care for their skin as early as possible so that they can cultivate that très chic, effortless look. Similarly, people in the US don’t consider skincare as just for the face; normally, they look for products that can care for their entire body, like bath bombs and body scrubs.

The Japanese are huge advocates of natural skincare; they were in part responsible for the masking trend that took the world by storm. Koreans are more intense with their routines, famously popularizing the 10-step skincare routine that aims to maintain a fresh-faced, glowy look. A Google report actually details how there are key differences in the kind of skincare that people from different countries, based on what they search. It’s really cool!

I started my skincare routine when I was 25 which is kind of late. You can never start prevention and slowing down the aging process too early. I kinda wish I started in my teens. But once you’ve decided to get a routine going, finding the right products for your skin and the climate you’re in is vital. This is where you might have a little trial and error going on.

First thing’s first is knowing the kind of skin you have. It may be dry, oily, or combination, but visit a dermatologist to figure it out. It will save you a lot of money and confusion in the long run! These are the products I use for my combination skin.

Day and Night

Mario Badescu Acne Facial Cleanser

Almost too pretty to use. Almost. (RP @emilyjanehardy)

As part of any basic skincare routine, you need a good cleanser that is dependable and doesn’t dehydrate your skin. I’ve been loving Mario Badescu’s cleanser, which is incredibly gentle yet helps improve the look of my skin. You can use it twice a day like I do.

Glossier Sunscreen SPF 35

Never go out of the house without sunscreen! The sun’s rays can be harsh and unforgiving, and may even be felt even when you’re in the shade. I use Glossier’s, which is one of the best as it leaves no white cast on your face and is easily absorbed by the skin. Remember to reapply every four hours if possible to ensure extended protection!

La Mer Moisturizing Soft Cream

This is a calming and firming moisturizer that is perfect for any skin type. Apart from the usual benefits of a moisturizer, it helps protect your skin from the harsh stresses of the environment.

Night

Shu Uemura Anti-Oxi+ Skin Refining Cleansing Oil

Never go to bed without removing your makeup! I swear by Shu Uemura’s cleansing oils, which have been a cult favorite for the longest time. Before you apply a facial cleanser to your face, remove all traces of makeup with an oil that breaks down and removes the product on your face.

La Mer The Eye Concentrate

Don’t wait until it’s too late to begin applying eye cream. This one by La Mer helps nourish and hydrate your eye area to prevent wrinkles and crows’ feet. Keeping your eye area fresh and hydrated can make anyone look much younger than they are! 🙂

Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum

There must be magic in this bottle. I don’t skip this step of my skincare routine simply because it does wonders for my skin. I put this on before going to bed, and in the morning, I wake up super refreshed and renewed.

Biotherm Life Plankton Mask

skincare routine

To maximize the products I love and are effective on me, I alternate using this Biotherm Life Plankton Mask with the Estée Lauder Serum. This also has great healing and renewing properties that makes my skin look very good when I wake up!

So there you have it! I don’t exactly have a super involved 10-skep skincare routine, but for every day, these products are enough and work for me. (My after-beach skincare is another story!) It took a while to get there, but these are my dependables. Also, all of my moisturizers and sunscreen are water-based and not sticky. This is perfect for the humid Philippine weather.

If you need a recommendation for a dermatologist to help you figure out your skin type, I recommend Luminisce Skin & Laser Clinic. It’s been my go-to clinic for the past five years now. Apart from that, just do your research with the products you buy. Expensive creams may not work on your skin, and what is popular may not always be for you.

Pro shopping tip: Always ask for samples when you visit beauty kiosks. Don’t buy a product outright if you’re not sure about it. Trying the samples can help you better decide if the product is a good fit.

I hope this gives you an idea of how I maintain my skin. I’m probably never going to be a fan of all those whitening creams and products since I love my morena skin so much, but hey, you do you! As long as you maintain the health of your skin, your beauty will really shine, no makeup necessary.

Have you ever experienced skin purging when trying out new skin care products? I’m freaking out because I just bought whole new set of products and I think I’m breaking out.
